Preparing A Retirement Speech To Remember

At the upcoming retirement party that your colleagues have organized for you, you know that a retirement speech will be expected of you. It would be a great idea for you to prepare your speech ahead of time. If you are not a confident public speaker, be sure to have the speech written down and with you during the party. If you loose your confidence at the last minute at the party or become too emotional, you have the opportunity to read the written speech. It helps that you rehearse your retirement speech several times so that you can deliver it with panache and make it memorable for all that attend the party to be held in your honor. If you do not prepare your retirement speech and attempt an off the cuff delivery, you run the risk of speaking incoherently and unintelligibly due to the swirling emotions that you may feel about leaving the familiar surroundings of your office and friendly colleagues. You do not want the party that your colleagues have spent so much effort preparing to be remembered by your bumbling and silly attempt at public speaking. You owe it to them to say your farewells elegantly and confidently.

What Needs To Go Into A Retirement Speech

If you are not a professional speech writer or PR person, it is very difficult to write one. Preparing a retirement speech is not something that will come naturally to everyone. So, you need to set aside enough time to gather a couple of ideas and prepare the outline of your speech. The speech that you initially prepared will go through several revisions until the final date when you will deliver it at your party.

Some of the key things you would mention in your speech are gratitude for all the great things that your management and colleagues have done for you to make your employment with the firm a rewarding one, key company events that have been especially meaningful to you, humorous episodes and people over the years and finally appreciation for the party that they have organized in your honor. These key ideas will give you an outline from which you can flesh out the details. A retirement speech should not be too long. It should be long enough to say the things that matter. Keep it light-hearted and sincere. If the speech is good, the audience will not be bored. If you must insist, the speech should be between 10 and 15 minutes long. Excellent public speakers can keep an audience enthralled for at least half an hour.

Retirement is a very special milestone in people's lives. From that point onwards, a retiree has effectively outlived his economic value to the capitalist system. It is a clear marker that they have aged and that there will be potentially a few more decades - the golden years - before our times are up. The retirement speech may address some of these issues, concerns, fears and of course, joys.
